Company Information

GIO began in 1927 as the Government Insurance Office of New South Wales, intended to cover employees with Workers' Compensation. Over the years, more insurance products were added, such as life insurance in 1941.

By the early 1990s, GIO expanded into the private sector, selling insurance products through Western Australia's Home Building Society, and opening nearly a hundred of its own retail offices. The company became publicly listed in 1992.

AMP bought most of GIO in 1999 and sold it to Suncorp in 2001, in a huge acquisition for that company. Suncorp suddenly became the second largest general insurance company in the nation, with GIO as a wholly-owned subsidiary.
